Earthquake Relief Operation
What we do
Sichuan Quake Relief is a non-profit, humanitarian organization, coordinating small-scale projects to improve the lives of people affected by the May 12th, 2008 7.9 magnitude earthquake. Sichuan Quake Relief is now getting involved with community recovery projects, focusing its efforts on acting as an information hub, connecting donors with communities in need, and providing longer term updates on progress.
Immediately after the quake SQR was identifying the specific needs of remote communities that may not have been receiving immediate assistance, sending out appeals, collecting funds and supplies, and coordinated their delivery.
Who we are
Immediately after the quake struck, a group of Chengdu-based expatriates joined forces, and using the The Bookworm cafe as headquarters, worked to assist the relief operation.
The Sichuan Quake Relief project is an organization made up of people who live and work in Chengdu. Most of the individuals who are involved in this project have been personally affected, or have friends and colleagues who have been affected by this disaster.
Projects to date
To date, the group has distributed over 120 tons of donated goods, collected over 20 tons of clothing for distribution, created cooking sets for villages to set up communal kitchens, distributed stationary and toys to tent schools, obtained tents and tarps for shelters, distributed clean drinking water to areas where this was scarce, distributed hygiene sets, school supplies, toys and games, organized a Children's Day, coordinated NGO meetings, put donors and experts in direct touch with local communities (see www.iboughtashelter.com for an example) and is continuing to build its database of NGO activity and community development in the region. How to donate to the project
There are a three ways to help the Sichuan Quake Relief project.
1. Send money directly to our organization. If you would like your money allocated to a specific purpose, please tell us, and we will do our best to oblige. You will be informed how the money was spent.
You can donate via wire transfer. If you would like to donate this way, please email us here and we will send you instructions.
2. You can send money to one of the many other excellent organizations listed in the right-hand side bar.
3. Purchase SQR calendars, T-shirts, eco-friendly shopping bags, and postcards. More details soon.
